HOUSTON (Feb. 14, 2024) - Houston Dynamo 2 has re-signed Dynamo Academy product Diego Gonzalez to a new contract through 2025.
“Diego is a player that we have seen consistently progress throughout his time with the club beginning with the Dynamo Academy from the age of 12,” Dynamo assistant general manager Nick Kowba said. “He was a consistent player and leader for Dynamo 2 and a top performer in the league. We’re happy he has the confidence in our staff and this environment to help him continue developing as a professional.”
Gonzalez played a larger role with Dynamo 2, making 28 starts in 28 appearances for Dynamo Dos. His 13 goals on the year were second on the team and a career high for Gonalez. Dynamo 2 held a 9-1-1 (WLD) record in the regular season and playoffs in 2023 when Gonzalez scored in the game. The forward was also credited with six assists in the regular season with an accurate pass percentage of 82.6 percent.
The 21-year-old joined the Houston Dynamo Academy at the age of 12 and captained the U-23 team in 2021. In 2022, Gonzalez made his professional debut with Dynamo 2 during the inaugural season of MLS NEXT Pro where he made 19 appearances and seven starts, scoring two goals.
Gonzalez was one of seven Houston Dynamo 2 players that joined the first team in Guadalajara, Mexico for the first slate of preseason games. The midfielder is currently in Central Florida with the first team for the final preseason game of the year against Orlando City SC.
