The Houston Dynamo Reserves (5-1-1) defeated the Sporting KC Reserves (2-4-2) 2-0, Tuesday morning, at the Houston Amateur Sports Park. Cam Weaver recorded a brace for the Dynamo who moved into a tie with Colorado for first place in the Reserve League Central/Mountain Division.

The Dynamo pressured the Sporting KC backline early and capitalized in the 17th minute. After a give-and-go between Colin Clark and Josue Soto, the homegrown midfielder curled in a cross to the six-yard box. Weaver came streaking into the box and headed the ball to the near post past KC goalkeeper Eric Kronberg.

The visitors nearly drew even in the 31st minute. Sporting played the ball down the left flank and Dynamo goalkeeper Tyler Deric came off his line to knock away the cross. The ball fell to forward Soony Saad who lined up a volley but could not get off a clean shot on target. Deric scrambled to his feet and picked up the loose ball in the box to keep Sporting off the board. The fourth-year goalkeeper made only one save in the match en route in his fourth reserve-league shutout of the year.

The Dynamo had an opportunity to extend their lead minutes before halftime. Colin Clark received the ball at the top of the penalty box and played it to Warren Creavalle. The Dynamo center back juked a defender but Kronberg was there to scoop up the deflected shot attempt.

Sporting KC Academy midfielder Joey Piatczyc entered the game at halftime for the visitors. The U-18 midfielder nearly leveled the match in the 61st minute, but Deric did well to smother his 25-yard strike.

The Dynamo continued to pressure Sporting and were able to double their lead in the 80th minute when Nathan Sturgis sent a long ball up top to Weaver. An SKC defender misplayed the long ball, which allowed Weaver a one-on-one with the Sporting goalkeeper. The Dynamo striker played the ball around Kronberg and was taken down by the 29-year-old goalkeeper. Kronberg was issued a red card and Weaver hammered the ensuing penalty kick past substitute ‘keeper Scott Angevine. The brace increased Weaver’s reserve league goal-scoring total to six.

The Dynamo Reserves will play their next match on September 7 when they welcome the Real Salt Lake Reserves to Houston. Sporting Kansas City will next host Real Salt Lake on Tuesday, Sept. 11 in the team’s home finale in the 2012 Reserve League season.
