Houston Dynamo forward Erick Torres will join Mexican club Cruz Azul on loan for the remainder of 2016, pending Cruz Azul’s receipt of his International Transfer Certificate, the clubs announced today.
Torres, 23, has one assist in 11 appearances (four starts) with the Dynamo this season. The Designated Player and Guadalajara native was a part of Mexico’s squad at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, making two appearances (one start).
“After careful consideration as a club, and following discussions with Erick, we feel at this time he will benefit from a fresh environment going on loan with Cruz Azul,” Dynamo VP/general manager Matt Jordan said. “We will be monitoring his progress and wish him well while away on loan.”
Cruz Azul is one of the largest clubs in Mexico, with eight First Division championships and six CONCACAF Champions League titles. Founded in 1927, the Mexico City club is tied for ninth place in the 2016 Apertura season of Liga MX, with nine points after seven games.
Cruz Azul holds an option to execute a permanent transfer at the conclusion of the loan period. If the transfer is not executed, Torres will return to the Dynamo for the 2017 preseason.
