The Houston Dynamo captured the first leg of the Texas Derby with a 2-1 win over their in-state rivals FC Dallas this afternoon at BBVA Compass Stadium.
With the win, the Dynamo improved to 6-1-1 on the year with 19 points and remained unbeaten at BBVA Compass Stadium this season. The club is off to its best start in history, surpassing the Dynamo’s 4-2-2 start to the 2013 season.
The Dynamo broke through in the 21st minute off of a penalty kick by forward Mauro Manotas. They were awarded the penalty after forward Alberth Elis was tripped inside the box in the 18th minute. Manotas converted with a low shot inside the left post to give Houston a 1-0 lead.
Houston doubled the lead in the 58th minute, with Elis once again igniting the play. The Honduran international found Dynamo Academy product Memo Rodriguez with a long, low pass in front of the Dallas backline. Rodriguez drove inside the box and ripped a low centering pass toward the front of goal. His cross found Manotas outside the six-yard box for a one-touch finish and his 40th goal in league play.
The Sabanalarga, Colombia native bagged his sixth career brace and his seventh career multi-goal game. With three goals in his last two games, Manotas reclaimed the team scoring lead with five on the year and is now one goal shy of matching Brad Davis as the third highest goal scorer in the MLS regular season.
FC Dallas pulled a goal back late when forward Dominique Badji scored in the 87th minute. Badji’s goal came less than a minute after Houston forward Romell Quioto appeared to have given the Dynamo a 3-0 lead before his apparent goal was ruled offside.
The visitors had a goal of their own called back when midfielder Santiago Mosquera put a ball in the net in the sixth minute of extra time before the goal was waved off with a foul.
Houston goalkeeper Joe Willis finished the first half with a double save after he handled Michael Barrios’ shot from outside the box and a follow up from Jesús Ferreira. The Dynamo goalkeeper finished with a season-high five saves en route to his 30th career win.
The Dynamo take to the road next weekend as they visit the Pacific Northwest to take on Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, May 11. That match is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. CDT. The team returns to BBVA Compass Stadium on Wednesday, May 15 to host the Portland Timbers. That match is the second of Houston’s (713) Series, which features a $7, a $1 hot dog and a $3 beer.
