Forgive Brad Davis if he was caught slightly off guard on Monday. Working on re-flooring his house, he had not yet seen the e-mail announcing his selection to All Stars Helping Kids’ Dream Team for Public Service.
“I’m ecstatic,” the veteran midfielder said. “I’m shocked. I’m happy that it’s been recognized, because it’s only going to bring more recognition to the cause.”

Davis, an MLS All-Star in back-to-back seasons, was nominated for his work with military service members and their families in the Houston area, in addition to his other charitable work. Although he may not have been prepared for the announcement, he was aware that he had been one of 36 nominees for the final 10 spots and that he had been honored as part of a select group.
“I’m tremendously honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as this award,” Davis said. “To be involved with this group of people and see what they do off the field is amazing. Military service means a lot to me and to my family, and it’s always been a part of my life and something I will continue to support. Everybody knows about it, but hopefully this helps get more people on board, and I’m sure the other nine contestants have good causes themselves.”
The group of 10 finalists for two Jefferson Awards for public service includes Davis, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, New York Yankees pitcher C.C. Sabathia, former Atlanta Falcons running back Warrick Dunn, golf star Ernie Els, and NBA guard Stephen Curry, among others.
The 10 finalists will participate in a text-to-donate contest, with a text of ‘DAVIS’ to 50555 making a $5 donation to the athlete’s cause, and many donations will be matched by All Stars Helping Kids. Two members of the Dream Team will later be selected as winners of the national Jefferson Award. Former Dynamo midfielder Stuart Holden was part of last year’s Dream Team, giving the Dynamo finalists in back-to-back years.
“I'd like to congratulate Brad on his deserving award,” said Dynamo president Chris Canetti. “He is a constant contributor to the community, and it is good to see him receiving recognition. He is a great representative of our organization, and we are thankful for his efforts.”
Davis will have the opportunity to join the other athletes at a March reception celebrating their efforts, and he of course plans to continue his Brad’s Brigade program during the 2011 season.
“To be a part of this and be up for an award that’s for what we do in our community, not just on the field, really touches home,” Davis said. “[Military service] has been in my family since I’ve been alive, and it will always continue to be.”
