The month of May will be a special one for the Houston Dynamo and fans of the club. Each of the Dynamo’s three home games in the month will carry with it a special element that allows the club and Dynamo fans to support worthy causes and honor the heroes in our own community.
At the team’s May 7 match vs. Sporting Kansas City, presented by BHP Billiton, the Dynamo will have a pair of significant community-related events taking place. Prior to the game, the club is teaming with Kroger to Black Out Hunger and encouraging fans to bring a canned food item to the game. Fans who bring a canned food item to the box office will receive a $2 discount on their game ticket as well. All donations will go to the Houston Food Bank, where they will be used to help undernourished children and families in the Houston area.
Also that night, the Dynamo will recognize the Houston Dynamo Unified team at halftime. Dynamo Unified is in its first year as part of Major League Soccer’s league-wide partnership with Special Olympics North America. The team is comprised of athletes with disabilities and those without, who compete against other MLS Unified teams throughout the year.
Dynamo Unified will play their first-ever match on Sunday, May 8 at 10:00 a.m. CDT against Sporting Kansas City Unified at Houston Sports Park. The match is free and all Dynamo fans are encouraged to attend and cheer on the competitors from both squads.
On May 14, the Dynamo will host Real Salt Lake on First Responders Appreciation Night, presented by Mustang CAT. Members of the Houston Police Department and Houston Fire Department will lead the crowd in the Dynamo’s traditional “We Are Orange” song prior to kickoff, and HPD and HFD members will be recognized throughout the match. A special ticket package is available with partial proceeds going to police and fire nonprofits.
Following the Dynamo match, HPD and HFD will square off in their annual ‘Guns And Hoses’ soccer match on the pitch. Fans are encouraged to stick around after the Dynamo game concludes to support the men and women who protect and serve the Houston community every day.
Finally, on May 24 Houston will host the annual BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup against Real Sociedad from Spain’s Liga BBVA. Proceeds from this year’s BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup will go toward Houston-based not-for-profit organizations through Dynamo Charities and BBVA Compass.
In previous years, proceeds from the BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup have supported organizations such as Junior Achievement and the Business of Sports program. This year’s recipient has not been announced.
Dynamo Charities will also be hosting multiple fundraisers to help raise money for each of the causes above. Tickets for each match are available here or by calling (713) 276-GOAL.
