Houston Dynamo 2 Fall to Colorado Rapids 2

DENVER (Aug. 3, 2024) – Houston Dynamo 2's five-game unbeaten streak ended earlier tonight after their 2–1 loss on the road to Colorado Rapids 2. The streak began on June 30th with a 3-1 victory over Minnesota United FC 2 and included back-to-back victories over in-state rivals Austin FC II and North Texas SC.

Colorado took the lead in the 62nd minute after Marlon Vargas found Rogelio Garcia inside the box. Garcia found the inside of the far post for his first goal of the season. Colorado doubled their lead in the 78th minute following a free kick from Robinson Aguirre into the box that found Colton Swan.

Dynamo 2 prevented the shutout in the 82nd minute following a free kick from captain Diego Gonzalez. The ball was first cleared by the Rapids goalkeeper, but Jordy Burbano capitalized on the loose ball for his first goal of the season.

Houston’s first opportunity of the game came in the fifth minute after David Garcia won a foul outside the box. Gonzalez took the ensuing free kick, but it was cleared at the near post by the Rapids backline.

Defender Jeferson Medina made a key defensive play in the 11th minute after he tracked down Jackson Travis at the endline and prevented a cross into the box. Medina led the team with three tackles won and finished with six recoveries.

Dynamo 2 forward Mattheo Dimareli forced a save in the 33rd minute with a shot from inside the box. The 15-year-old has scored one goal and tallied two assists this season.

Goalkeeper Nico Hansen denied Wayne Frederick II in the final moments of the first half to keep the game scoreless.

Houston’s first opportunity of the second half came off the left foot of Kieran Sargeant, but his shot was saved at the far post by the Rapids goalkeeper.

Houston was awarded a penalty kick in the 70th minute following a foul to defender Femi Awodesu inside the box. Forward Ifu Achara took the ensuing penalty kick, but his effort bounced off the right post.

Dynamo Academy midfielder Omar Bolanos forced a save moments later with an ambitious effort from outside the box.

Dynamo 2 nearly scored the equalizer in the 87th minute after Gonzalez forced a save at the near post.
